You can do really well here.
We get a very good base salary plus two separate bonus plans — a net profits bonus and an incentive bonus for meeting performance targets. On top of that, we have a really good benefits package. I probably get three or four recruiters calling me every month, but I'm not interested. I don't think I could do better than this anywhere else.
It's not an easy job. It's a long day and you work hard, but that's part of the challenge. You've got to maintain really high standards of service, quality and hospitality, and at the same time you've got to make sure that you are profitable.
That's true of any restaurant, but you can do it better at Cracker Barrel. The company has procedures and standards that, if you follow them, will work for you. And we have terrific customer loyalty. People see the sign and they come here because Cracker Barrel has been so consistent over the years with the product. By making almost everything from scratch, you get a far superior product. And over time we've educated our guests to appreciate that difference. So while the Cracker Barrel standards are much harder to meet than other restaurant chains, they turn around and benefit you a lot more.
I get a little antsy when it's quiet. But when it's really busy, that's show time. You get pumped up and you just want to go out there and do it. This is a hands-on job; you're always on the move. You go into so many restaurants and you never see the manager. He's in the back someplace filling out paperwork. We don't have a lot of that, but we are expected to be out on the floor. And thank goodness, I say. All that walking around may tire me out at the end of the day, but it keeps me active and fit.
And I like working with young people, too. Being around young people every day keeps me feeling young. I may not look like a youngster, but I sure feel like one.
